Technology Related Health Risks

This is an era of technology. Technology has invaded every aspect of our lives - from personal relationships to shopping to business to fitness workouts; technology is fundamentally changing the way we live. While it may be a blessing for making our lives easier, “There Is a Flip Side to This”. A number of medical problems related to long-term use of gadgets have been reported.

Medical Problems Associated With Gadgets
Studies suggest that eye-strain was the most common tech-related affliction. This was followed by back pain, neck pain & headaches. Also reported were complaints relating to wrist problems like carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia & hearing problems related to excessive use of headphones.

Ways in Which Gadgets Affect Our Health
Musculoskeletal Disorders
Sitting in front of computers give rise to postural problems. These problems relate to musculoskeletal disorders caused by the need for users to be crouched & hunched towards monitors & computer components due to the design & positioning of particular computer peripherals. This hunching forward of users cause posture & back problems & it is also the cause for severe & acute pain in the upper back, particularly pain in the neck & or shoulders.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The medical problem associated with computer-related work is carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a stress-related injury caused by repetitive movement of joints, especially the wrist, & it can lead to numerous musculoskeletal problems. It is a serious nerve disorder which may start as a slight cramp, a muscle pull or a muscle spasm in the wrist. If not attended promptly it may further progress leading to pain, sensory changes & loss of function within hand. Numbness in the fingers (especially thumb, index & middle finger), burning, tingling sensation in palm, pain radiating in upward direction of hand, tightening of joints & fingers & poor grip while holding objects.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Eye problems from computer, smart-phone & tablet use are nothing new. Frequent computer users suffer from computer vision syndrome, which is a degenerative eye problem which can result in severely reduced eyesight (Myopia), blurred vision, overall eye tiredness & even Glaucoma. Computer use makes eyes not only sore, but also dry. People don't blink as much when they're staring at a computer screen. This causes the tear-film on eyes to dry up & dry eyes are unpleasant. You get blurry vision, your eyes narrow & you can lose you peripheral vision.

Insomnia
Too much of artificial light from TV & computer screen might affect melatonin production by throwing away circadian rhythms, preventing deep & restorative sleep. Studies reveal heavy cell phone use showed an increase in sleep disorders in men & an increase in depressive symptoms in both men & women. Regular, late night computer use, without any frequent breaks was associated with sleep disorders, stress & depressive symptoms in both men & women.

Other Health Issues
There is a major risk of developing deep vein thrombosis following sitting for long hours at computer. Hearing loss is also reported due to loud music from headphones, which may also be responsible for accidents. Cell phones may also be covered with numerous bacteria leading to a variety of infections.
